What is Chef 360 Platform?

Chef 360 Platform is an integrated set of services that manage your fleet of nodes, run operational jobs across them, keep their configuration in a known state, and provide the identity, access, and web UI layers that tie those capabilities together.

Read this page if you’re evaluating Chef 360 Platform or you’ve inherited a deployment and need to know what it does. If you already know what you want to accomplish, go straight to Get started.

What Chef 360 Platform does

Chef 360 Platform automates DevOps work whenever, wherever, and however your environment requires it:

  • Whenever: run scheduled actions, continuous scans, or immediate “execute-once” jobs, so you have real-time visibility into a changing infrastructure estate.
  • Wherever: operate across hybrid environments, from on-premises data centers to all major public clouds, covering the platforms and resources Chef supports.
  • However: let teams work the way they already do, whether they follow ITIL or ChatOps, using the native JSON syntax or one of several extensible infrastructure-as-code DSLs.

Core capability areas

Chef 360 Platform organizes its services into four core areas:

  • Node Management enrolls nodes into the platform and keeps track of their identity, status, attributes, tags, installed skills, and check-ins. Enrollment brings a node under management so the platform can monitor and act on it.
  • Chef Courier runs ad hoc or scheduled jobs across the nodes in your fleet. Courier accepts a job, schedules and delivers its steps to the targeted nodes, and reports back status and results.
  • Chef Declarative State Management (DSM) stores the cookbooks, policies, and node metadata that define your infrastructure’s configuration, so nodes can retrieve and apply the configuration that applies to them.
  • Platform services provide the supporting layer: identity and access management, an API gateway, licensing, notifications, single sign-on, and the web UI you use to sign in, manage organizational units and roles, and register your workstation.

For what you can do with these services, see Key capabilities. For a detailed breakdown of the services behind each area, see Service architecture.

How you can run it

Chef 360 Platform is available as a service hosted by Progress, or deployed in your own infrastructure, which suits highly regulated environments. See Deployment models for a comparison.
